Khadi Denim Vs. Handloom Denim

Handloom Denim

Hand-woven Selvedge Denim made from
100% Cotton Mill-spun Yarn

Khadi Denim

Hand-woven Selvedge Denim made from
100% Cotton Hand-spun Yarn

While both of these are hand-woven, on manually operated looms, there is a major difference between the two varieties – in what we call the “handloom denim”, the yarn used is mill-spun, and in the “khadi denim” the yarn used is hand-spun.

The weaving of khadi denim fabric is much more complex and intricate compared to handloom denim fabric.

However, it is a fact that the khadi denim fabric is far more superior to handloom denim fabric.

Completely Hand-based Process

The process that we follow for making both handloom denim and khadi denim, beyond the making of yarn is same. It is a completely manual, or hand-based, process, involving the following:

  • Making Hanks of yarn (if yarn has been sourced on cones)
  • Dyeing of yarn in hank form
  • Sizing of yarn in hank form
  • Reeling of yarn
  • Preparation of warp
  • Drawing-in / Jointing
  • Weaving

We do not use any electrically operated, or automated, machines at any stage of the entire process for both handloom and khadi denim.
