Not all of us have had the privilege of experiencing, first-hand, the artisanal ways of doing things.
In these videos, we have tried to capture the true essence of working with hands, with make-shift machines, without using electricity, and without burning any fuels. This is how traditional craftspersons have been weaving fabric for centuries, with their entire life synchronized completely to nature.

Cone To Hanks
Eco-friendly handwoven selvedge denim fabric is made from 100% cotton mill-spun yarn.
The yarn that we procure from spinning mills comes in the form of cones. The first step in our process of making handloom denim is to convert the yarn on cones to hanks.
The conversion of yarn from cones to hanks is done manually on a hand making machine. The hand-making machine is manually operated, as you can see in this video, and severa hands are made at one time. The cones – which serve as the source of yarn – can also be seen in this video.
The hanks of yarn made at this stage are used for further dyeing or reeling, as required.
Hanks to Reels
The entire process of making handloom denim is carried out without using any automated or electrically operated machines.
The yarn which is in the form of hanks needs to be “reeled” onto smaller packages prior to the setting up of warp.
The reeling is carried out manually – mostly by women – on a make-shift charkha which serves as a winding machine.
Reels To Warp
The reels of yarn are mounted on a creel (stand) and the individual ends are drawn out to form a “rope” which is wrapped around a large, hollow, wooden drum.
The number of individual ends in one rope, and the total number of ropes is based on the required construction and width of the fabric. All the yarns in the entire set will be of same length, and the length depends on the final quantity of fabric to be woven.
It is easy to see that this process also is being carried out manually – without using any electrically operated machine.
Warp To Fabric
Here you can enjoy the rhythmic weaving of eco-friendly selvedge denim on manually operated shuttle loom, without using electrical motor.
The “shuttle”, which carries the weft yarn, from one end to the other end, and back, is the key to forming the selvedge.
Unlike most of the handlooms used for plain weave, the handloom, used for weaving denim have four heald-wire frames, and four foot pedals, which result in the 3 Up 1 Down twill weave in denim fabric.
